The Company was first organized in 1945 under the Blackman Uhler Industries name as a distributor of textile dyes; in the mid-1950s the first textile dye manufacturing facility was built in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
During the 1960s, the Company diversified into the specialty chemicals and metals arenas through several acquisitions including Bristol Metals. Its name was changed to Synalloy Corporation in 1967 at which time it became a public company.
In the late 1990s, the Company acquired several chemical companies including Manufacturers Chemicals. During this time the Company’s textile business was faced with stiff competition from imported dyes, and the decision was made to exit the textile dye business and close several underperforming operations in the mid-2000s. In 2009, the Company re-evaluated its business strategy and sold its Organic Pigments and Blackman Uhler specialty chemicals operations.
In August of 2012, Synalloy acquired Palmer of Texas located in Andrews, Texas. Palmer, an industry leader with close to 25 years’ experience in manufacturing fiberglass liquid storage tanks, steel liquid storage tanks and separation equipment, reports through the Synalloy Metals Division.
In August of 2013, Synalloy acquired the assets of Color Resources International located in Fountain Inn, South Carolina. The newly formed CRI Tolling, LLC. has a proud tradition of high quality chemical tolling services for its diverse customers and is part of the Synalloy Chemicals Division.
In November of 2014, Synalloy acquired Specialty Pipe & Tube from The Wolseley Group. Specialty Pipe and Tube is the nation’s leading distributor of large diameter, heavy wall seamless pipe & tubing. Specialty serves a diverse customer group from the Mineral Springs, Ohio and Houston, Texas locations and is a part of Synalloy’s Metals Division.
In February 2017, Synalloy’s Bristol Metals business unit acquired the stainless steel pipe and tube operations of Marcegaglia USA located in Munhall, PA. The combined business operates as Bristol Metals with facilities in Bristol, TN and Munhall, PA and is the largest domestic producer of welded stainless steel pipe and mechanical tube in North America.
In July 2018, Synalloy’s Bristol Metals business unit acquired the galvanized pipe and tube operations of Marcegaglia USA located in Munhall, PA. This acquisition further expanded Bristol Metals’ pipe and tube operation in the galvanized and ornamental space.
In January 2019, Synalloy acquired American Stainless Tubing (ASTI) with operations in Statesville, NC and Troutman, NC. ASTI added high-end ornamental welded stainless steel tube capabilities to Bristol Metals’ diverse stainless steel and alloy pipe and tubing capabilities.
The Synalloy Metals Division is made up of American Stainless Tubing, Bristol Metals, Palmer of Texas and Specialty Pipe & Tube. The Synalloy Chemicals Division is made up of Manufacturers Chemicals, LLC and CRI Tolling, LLC. Synalloy Chemicals produces specialty chemicals for the carpet, chemical, paper, metals, mining, agricultural, fiber, paint, textile, automotive, petroleum, cosmetics, mattress, furniture, janitorial and other industries.
